Excellent, honest review as always. I completely agree that this is a crime thriller that’s all about the characters. Charlotte’s mother was infuriatingly brilliant – would love to know if she was based on a real person! :)

Great review Miles, I’m a huge Dickens fan (Bleak House being my favourite) and haven’t come across Lynn Shepherd before. I’ll definitely look her up now. If she’s captured Victorian London in the way Dickens did, she must be talented indeed.

I am very glad you are back. I had wondered what had happened. I am a lurker but really like your blog and now and again the best things for a book blogger are either a break or a book clean out, I have just done the latter and its been really freeing.

Two things I have learnt from some blogging greats…

1. Only blog what you want to when you want to.

2. If people like it they will wait if a blog goes quiet a while.

Well Miles, in the week or so you’ve been away I’ve thought about what’s missing without you on Twitter and without your blog being around… There were a few… but here’s my top 3 :

I understand from discussions with people who have read this book that the scenes, far from being “sex scenes” are actually scenes of sexual assault on a kidnapped woman. If this is the case (I don’t intend to read a book with this content) I think your review should make this clear as the two things are completely different. To equate sexual assault with a “sex scene” is insulting to women.

I’ve basically grown up with Kinsey so I was bound to like the book but it’s nice to know it was enjoyable for someone new to the series.
