After 11 months on numerous Allotment lists I received a phone call late Friday night informing me that I had reached the top of the waiting list at a local allotment – owned incidentaly by The Earl of Plymouth. I have been fortunate over the last 12 months to have shared a plot on another piece of land and will happily continue with that due to the size and the amount of work put in getting that one into shape.
Going out on one’s own is and will be a huge challenge but I’m not taking on anything too big – it’s a fairly small plot – 5 perch but that is more than enough as a second plot. I went along today and was pleased with what I saw. A ready built shed, a cold frame and a rabbit proof fence ing the plot.
It will take some doing getting into shape but it isn’t an impossible task. I’ve taken a few shots with the iphone on day one just to have a note of how it all began! More in a week or so once I’ve started clearing the weeds and rubbish. What gets me is the number of plots going to waste on allotments throughout the country from people who take on a project only to realise it’s far too much like hard work and then give up after two visits.
