A little over 18 months ago while watching “The Biggest Loser” – yes I did say “The Biggest Loser”!, I decided I had to do something about my weight. Despite the heavy slob that was me, I have always been fairly fit if not completely healthy!
When I say fit, not compared to what I was when playing a lot of sport but as and when the mood took me I could always go to the gym for a workout. Therein lies the problem, I didn’t feel like training and over the last five or more years weight ballooned. For those of you who have read my blog before you may have noticed that 18 months ago I weighed 22 ½ stone or 315 lbs.
That’s not good at all! My first target was to get down to 16 stone or 224 lbs and despite years of kidding myself that I was a supreme athlete, capable of anything, I knew I would be facing an uphill struggle.
The first 6 months were ok, nothing amazing and progress was slow. I didn’t have a personal trainer; I had membership to a gym that gave me little enthusiasm to train. It’s all about re-educating yourself and that doesn’t happen overnight. When you put weight on, it means you are eating more calories than you are burning on a daily basis. My diet was shocking! Chips five days a week doesn’t make for a healthy mind or body. I can attest to that!
Slowly but surely I begin to cut down my food intake, exercise doesn’t really increase a great deal but at least I know I’ve made a positive start. That was a little over a year ago and the weight started falling. I needed new kit and Kitbag were there at the right time!
I was a member of my old Fitness First gym for just three months and it closed down a week or so ago. To be honest I wasn’t disappointed as it saved me nine months of membership to a gym I barely knew! It really wasn’t a great gym, wasn’t welcoming if you know what I mean.
Bannatyne’s health club is only a few miles away from home and on the way home from work and despite being a little more expensive it certainly appears to offer more. With that in mind I went along last night to have my first training session and to chat with a trainer who took measurements and assessed my body – lucky guy!
First target achieved
I am now under 16 stone for the first time in years! I honestly wasn’t sure if I had the will power and desire to make it but I did – 15 stone and 13.6 lbs I decided a month or so ago when I got into the 16’s that 15 stone wouldn’t be enough for me and when I get to 15 ½ stones I will set myself another target. Not sure what it will be yet but watch this space!
Surprisingly though, when the trainer read out the results I wasn’t elated – I should have been so excited but I took it calmly, digested the figures and said – right then, 15 stone here I come. I think I was more excited to go under 17 stone than I was last night – strange how our minds work. Maybe it’s my competitive streak in me coming out, not letting my mind get carried away just yet!
Have fun and good luck with your weight loss if you are trying to shed those pesky pounds!
